The walk onto the Cairngorm plateau in the dark was a fine one, with the snow being firm underfoot and not an energy sapping plod through deep drifts. The reward for the early start was the intense colours of the Belt of Venus reflected in the snow. When the sun eventually rose the colours changed for a minute or two before the good light passed. A superb start to the day.
