Curlew (Numenius arquata)
Curlew are known for their evocative call. They are the largest European wading bird. Around 30% of the Western European population winters in the UK, making it of international importance. However curlew are declining in numbers and are listed Red for conservation status.
In winter they can be seen feeding on tidal mudflats and on nearby farmland. In summer they can be seen on upland moors where they breed.
Curlew are ground nesting birds. The nest is known as a "scrape". The chicks will remain with the parents for around four weeks.
